Description of LCARS 24 April 2005:
LCARS refers to the fictional 24-century computers on Star Trek. LCARS 24 is an alternative to Windows. Standby mode turns a TrueColor laptop into a Trekkie clock and calendar, with MIDI alarm and the appropriate setting functions. Utilities include a file manager, DOS box with editable command line and scrollable output, calculator, personal phonebook, and DOS program launcher (four non-LCARS graphical DOS programs bundled). Quick-reference facilities include a large, scrollable world map, periodic table, unit conversion, BMI calculator, system info, and library (which displays various provided reference files (.txt, jpg, and htm). LCARS 24 games include Ferengi Blackjack, Borg Solitaire, Chess, and Crossword. There is also a word-wrapping, spell-checking text editor that expands partially typed words like polymethylmethacrylate with a tap of the Alt key? Startup runs a 2-second gif video clip from Star Trek (three bundled). There is also an animation of the six inner planets orbiting the sun (done with resizing of bitmaps). All LCARS 24 programs start up instantly, some with the press of a hot key on the Standby screen. Help is all one-touch.
